GVL Buys the Castlemaine Gaol

We have thrilling news to share: Global Village Learning is now the proud custodian of the Old Castlemaine Gaol. After months of careful planning and courageous visioning, we’ve stepped through the gates—and into a bold new chapter.

What was once a place of confinement is set to become a sanctuary of learning, creativity, and community. This isn’t just a new site—it’s the physical embodiment of everything GVL stands for.

From Gaol to Gateway

The Castlemaine Gaol is steeped in stories—some painful, some powerful. And now, it becomes a place where young people and communities can write the next chapter.

Where silence once reigned, now ideas will echo.
Where walls once restricted, now doors will open.
Where punishment defined the past, purpose will shape the future.

Deep Respect and Regeneration

We acknowledge the Dja Dja Wurrung people as the Traditional Owners of this land. We also acknowledge the gaol’s history as a site where Aboriginal people were unjustly imprisoned. Regeneration here means telling the whole story – past, present, and future – and walking forward with integrity, partnerships, and listening.

This is not nostalgia. This is purpose.
Not restoration. But regeneration.
